LOS ANGELES, 6 AUGUST, 2012: The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have given container shipping line APL their Clean Air Action Plan Award for fighting air pollution. Singapore-based APL was the only carrier recognized in the area of Air Quality Leadership at the Corporate Level.
It was the third major sustainability award for APL since the carrier announced in April it will cut carbon emissions 30% by 2015. The others include:
"APL has a company-wide environmental policy which sets
objectives and targets for reducing the company's
environmental impact," said the two Southern California
ports.
They singled out APL for testing an innovative seawater
scrubber device on one of its ships, using cleaner-burning
low-sulphur fuel at berth to curb exhaust pollution, and for
investing US$4 billion to bring "some of the world's more
energy-efficient ships, into its fleet."
APL operates one of the largest marine terminals at the Port
of Los Angeles. Port tenants and organizations that
serve the ports are eligible for Clean Air Action Plan
awards.
