American Commercial Lines Presents Marine Environmental Stewardship Awards to Customers for Safe Handling of Chemicals, Petroleum Products, and Other Liquid Cargoes

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN, Jul 17, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) --American Commercial Lines Inc. ("ACL" or the "Company") recognized 41 customers with its Marine Environmental Stewardship Award on Tuesday, July 17 in Houston, Texas.

The customers recognized by ACL safely handled more than 2.1 billion gallons of chemicals with the barge transportation company in 2011 and share its commitment to safety and environmental stewardship. Recipients of the award are: Abengoa Bioenergy Trading U.S.; Agrifos Fertilizer, Inc.; Archer Daniels Midland Co.; BASF Corporation; Bayer MaterialScience; Bunge North America; CITGO Corporation; Consolidated Grain & Barge Co.; Cymetech Corporation; E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (Inc.); Eastman Chemical Company; ED & F Man Liquid Products LLC; Formosa Plastics Corporation, USA ; Gulfmark Energy, Inc.; Kolmar Americas, Inc.; Marathon Petroleum Company LP; MEGlobal Americas, Inc.; Methanex Methanol Company; Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc.; Murphy Oil USA, Inc.; Neville Chemical Company; Old World Industries, Inc.; Olin Chemical ; Owensboro Grain Company, LLC; Phillips 66; PPG Industries, Inc.; Procter & Gamble; Quality Liquid Feed Co.; SABIC Innovative Plastics; SeaRiver Maritime, Inc.; Shell Chemical LP Shell Trading (US) Company; Stryker Fuels, LLC; Styrolution America LLC; Sunoco Logistics; Texas Aromatics; Tricon Energy Ltd.; Valero Refining & Marketing; Vertex Energy, Inc.; Vitol Inc.; Westlake Vinyls, Inc.

"We are honored to recognize these valued customers for their environmental stewardship," Mark Knoy, President and CEO of ACL, stated. "Safety and protection of the marine environment are our operating priorities, and we thank them for sharing our commitment and for entrusting us with their cargo. By shipping on the inland waterways, they have chosen the safest, greenest, and most fuel efficient mode of transportation. We are proud to serve them and continue our partnership in protecting the marine environment."

Inland barging is the safest and most environmentally friendly mode of transportation. The rate of large spills (more than 1,000 gallons) for inland barge transportation is less than that of rail and truck (3.6 gallons per million ton miles for barge compared to 3.86 for rail and 6.06 for truck), according to a study by the Texas Transportation Institute. The comparison study also documents that inland barge transportation emits fewer air pollutants, including hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, than rail or truck. Barging is also noted by the study as the most fuel-efficient mode of transportation with the ability to move one ton of cargo 576 miles per gallon of fuel, 163 miles further than rail and 421 miles further than truck.

American Commercial Lines Inc. is an integrated marine transportation service company owned by Platinum Equity and operating in the United States Jones Act trades. The Company is headquartered in Jeffersonville, IN, has approximately 2,200 employees and operates a fleet of approximately 120 towboats and 2,300 barges.
