STANFORD, Calif. (www.BankOfTheWestClassic.com) - The 2012 Bank of the West Classic qualifying singles draw was announced Friday evening, featuring a 16-player field with competition scheduled over the next two days.
Four qualifiers will advance into the main draw, which gets underway Monday morning.
The qualifying draw includes eight seeded players: No. 1 Sesil Karatantcheva, No. 2 Coco Vandeweghe, No. 3 Erika Sema, No. 4 Alexa Glatch, No. 5 Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, No. 6 Yung-Jan Chan, No. 7 Grace Min and No. 8 Saisai Zheng.
Three of the five wildcard entrants in the draw are collegiate players hailing from the Bay Area, led by 2011 NCAA singles champion Jana Juricova of California. Juricova, who recently completed her Golden Bear career, earned All-America accolades in each of her four seasons. Juricova will square off against Chan in her first-round match, which is scheduled to be the fourth contest of the day on court six.
Stanford is also well-represented in the qualifying draw, with junior Kristie Ahn and sophomore Ellen Tsay earning spots.
An All-American in singles and ITA National Rookie of the Year in 2010, Ahn competed in only three matches last year while missing almost the entire season due to injuries. Tsay finished 24-8 overall and 17-4 in duals in her rookie year, playing mainly at the No. 4 spot of the lineup. Tsay will battle Lertcheewakarn at 11 a.m. to open the day inside the stadium, followed immediately by Ahn's contest against Sema.
The 2012 Bank of the West Classic will be held from July 9-15 at the Taube Family Tennis Center at Stanford University. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 866-WTA-TIXS (866-982-8497) or by logging on to www.BankoftheWestClassic.com. Individual session tickets to the tournament's opening round start at $26.
