Vancouver - Foodies who choose to stick to healthy and humane vegan meals love comfort food as much as anyone else-and in honour of the U.S.' National Macaroni Day, which falls on July 7, PETA is celebrating the Top Five Best Vegan Mac-and-Cheese Dishes. Taking the number-three spot on the list is Vancouver's own Wallflower Modern Diner, which nabbed the distinction thanks to its flavourful baked mac and cheese-made with soy vegan cheddar-which can be bulked up with sliced veggie hot dogs.  Although it's not in the U.S., PETA's tasters just could not resist including Wallflower Modern Diner's decadent mac and cheese in the top five list.

Taking first place is Sublime in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., whose oven-baked vegan mac and cheese starts with a decadent Dijon béchamel cheddar and finishes with a crumbly topping of panko bread crumbs.

Rounding out the top five are Salt Lake City's City Cakes & Café, whose rich and creamy vegan "cheeze" sauce is made of blended cashews and roasted red peppers; Soul Vegetarian in Tallahassee, Fla., which dishes up mac and cheese as a side dish that rounds out a perfect plate of steamed collard greens, barbecued tofu, and cornbread; and Belmont Vegetarian Restaurant in Worcester, Mass., where the mac and cheese is a creamy blend of almond milk, soy milk, and vegan cheddar cheese, with even more vegan cheddar cheese baked on top.

Seattle's PlumBistro and the Cornbread Café in Eugene, Ore., both nabbed honourable mentions.

"Nowadays, it's easier than ever to enjoy delicious comfort food that's both healthy and humane," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "PETA applauds Wallflower Modern Diner for demonstrating how dairy-free mac and cheese nourishes diners' bodies and souls without clogging their arteries."
