July 10 Public Briefing: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century

To become successful employees and citizens, today's students must not only master academic subjects such as mathematics, English, and science but also develop a range of skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and work ethic.

Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century, a new report from the National Research Council, defines the set of key cognitive and noncognitive skills that students must develop to succeed in education, work, and other areas of adult responsibility. The report describes how the skills relate to more traditional academic skills and summarizes what is known about how these skills can be learned, taught, and assessed. Members of the authoring committee will discuss the report's findings and recommendations at a one-hour public briefing on July 10.
