American Art in the Civil War Era

The Civil War was an important cultural watershed for the American consciousness, and artists had a range of responses to the nation's political and social upheavals. This course investigates some of the themes explored in art of the period and considers how the conflict affected both artists and audiences. Students also visit VMFA's special exhibition Bold, Cautious, True: Walt Whitman and American Art of the Civil War Period.

In her trunk show at the VMFA Shop, she will present jewelry inspired by Maharaja: The Splendors of India's Great Kings. A retired Episcopal priest, she donates 100 percent of the profits from her jewelry to the music ministry of St. James Episcopal Church in Richmond.

Director Sarah Singh will introduce the The Sky Below and lead a discussion afterwards with VMFA Trustee Dr. Shantaram Talegaonkar. Q & A to follow. The Sky Below is a courageous and award-winning documentary that explores the creation of Pakistan in 1947 and the partition of the Indian subcontinent, drawing on 5,000 years of culture to investigate the aftereffects of this political divide. The Sky Below was the official film presentation at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the originator of the exhibition Maharaja: The Splendor of India's Great Kings.

Dr. Jennifer Foley, Art Historian
Rudyard Kipling was a novelist, poet, and author of dozens of short stories. While he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907, he is today largely known for his children's stories, including The Jungle Book, and the British Imperialism that runs through his work, from Gunga Din to The White Man's Burden. Explore the historical context of Kipling's writing through the objects in the exhibition, Maharaja: The Splendors of India's Great Kings and Kim, his adventure story set in India in the midst of The Great Game.

Celebrate the Art of Brazil-Carnival

Experience the jubilee while celebrating Carnival in fall. Enjoy samba music and performances (even learn samba yourself!), watch Capoeira Resistencia (Brazilian martial arts)demonstrations, engage with local street performers, feel the rhythm of a Brazilian drumline, and march with a parade of local Richmond marching bands. Kids and parents will have the opportunity to make elaborate masks or headdresses to wear during the parade; Pandeiros, Brazilian tambourines or frame drums; and a one-of-a-kind ceramic vessel inspired by Pre-Columbian art. You can even dress up in full Carnival regalia for a fun picture in the photo booth. This party is not to be missed!

Teen Stylin' 2012: Fire and Ice Application Deadline
Create fiery fashion trends and cool creative clothing designs inspired by the special exhibition Chihuly at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. For students with a passion for clothing design, studio arts, installation art, and/or sculpture, Teen Stylin' provides aspiring designers with the guidance and assistance to create their own one-of-a-kind, wearable works of art. Over the course of eight weeks, more than 50 Virginia student designers in grades 6-12 work to create wearable works of art inspired by Dale Chihuly's glass and giant ice installations, the heat of glassmaking, as well as the influence of nature on Chihuly's work.

If you are interested in being a teen student designer, visit www.vmfa.museum/Teens/Stylin/ to download an application form. Teachers, counselors, or community center leaders, who are interested in nominating a teen, can submit a letter of recommendation explaining why the student is a good candidate for this program. This statement should be written on school letterhead and mailed to Jessica Bauserman, Youth Program Coordinator, 200 N. Boulevard, Richmond, Virginia, 23220 or emailed to jessica.bauserman@vmfa.museum. The student is responsible for completing the Nomination Application Form.

The First Fridays series features an eclectic mix of multicultural performing arts showcased in different spaces within the museum. Take advantage of our extended hours on Friday evenings (we're open until 9 pm) to also stroll through the galleries, explore the VMFA Shop, or enjoy dinner and drinks in Amuse Restaurant or Friday Art & Wine at Best Café.
Second Fridays: Wine Tasting
Taste different wines from around the world as Tony Karabaich, Amuse Restaurant Service Manager, pours his choices of interesting wines-reds, whites, sparkling, and more. Refine your palate and learn about different wines and winemaking regions from a variety of wine experts, who will be available for discussion and questions. Also enjoy discounted beverages and guided tours as part of Friday Art & Wine.
