Melville, NY - June 18, 2012 - Nu Horizons Electronics, an Arrow Electronics company, today released a new application note focusing on creating a Micron Technology RealSSD™ Memory Subsystem for Lattice ECP3 FPGAs in Embedded Applications.

Low-cost, low-power, high-functionality FPGAs are fnding their way into an ever broader set of applications. Demanding hand-held consumer and industrial electronic devices are the fastest growing applications segment today for this class of FPGA devices. The ability to combine all processing, interface and complex computation functions into a single device, without requiring high mask costs has been a boon to these fast moving audio/video oriented applications. Designs using both the RealSSD embedded USB mass storage drives from Micron Technology, and the Lattice ECP3 family of FPGAs can address even the most stringent low-cost, and high-reliability audio/video applications.

In this application note we will explore and example application that uses a Micron RealSSD mass storage drive and a Lattice ECP3 FPGA to implement a ruggedized video/audio picture frame as a replacement for critical signage applications in industrial applications. This ruggedized version of the popular consumer graphic picture frame can also communicate important time dependant information in industrial factory applications (perhaps to warn or inform operators or technicians during critical steps) without the need for a computer interface. These information frames can be placed anywhere in the building where the sign content depends on the time or state of the equipment or process.

Topics in this application note are organized by design task (Device Selection, FPGA Design, and Board Design) and each topic is a stand-alone section, with a short introduction or overview, followed by the detailed design guidelines. The reader may skip over sections and go directly to the topic of interest, or start at the beginning and follow each topic in order to quickly go through the entire design process.
