Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Andrew J. Shapiro will travel to Vietnam, Brunei, and Thailand June 19-23, 2012.

From June 19-20, in Hanoi, Vietnam, Assistant Secretary Shapiro will lead the fifth meeting of the U.S.-Vietnam Political, Security, and Defense Dialogue. Building on the success of the previous round of consultations held in 2011 in Washington, D.C., the Dialogue will highlight our continuing engagement in the region and America's increasingly robust bilateral relationship with Vietnam. The Dialogue will focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in the areas of peacekeeping operations and training, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, maritime search and rescue, regional security, nonproliferation, human rights, and the recovery and repatriation of U.S. service members lost during the Vietnam War.

On June 21, in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, Assistant Secretary Shapiro will meet with senior civilian and military officials to discuss political-military topics, bilateral relations and defense trade issues.

From June 21-22, in Bangkok, Thailand, Assistant Secretary Shapiro will hold consultations on a wide range of political-military issues, including continuing efforts to enhance partnerships in peacekeeping, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, joint military exercises and exchanges, counterterrorism, and security cooperation.
