Interior Design Students Win Big at Student Competition

Wentworth student Annmarie Gasperini, BIND' 12, took home this year's International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Providence City Center Student Award, good for Wentworth's third straight win in the competition and the second in a row for Gasperini. Her winning project-which also earned her a $1,000 cash prize from the IIDA-was a children's hospital design taken from an annual collaboration with Cambridge based planning and design firm Tsoi/Kobus & Associates.

The committee of three Rhode Island-based judges was pleased by Gasperini's knowledge of contemporary medical design trends as well as her professionalism during her presentation. Her winning project aimed to turn a child's hospital visit into a comforting and memorable journey instead of an intimidating and stressful trip.  Wentworth students also finished second and third in the competition, which is open to any junior or senior working toward a bachelor's degree in New England. Drew Bortles', BIND '12, project, a New York City sustainable office took second and earned him $500, while Jessica Griffin's, BIND '13, also an office design took third place and $250.

"It feels so great to be recognized with an award for all of the creativity and hard work I put into a semester-long project," Griffin said, "This was the first time I submitted any work for a competition, so I was very happy to hear about my placement."

Gasperini is also grateful the competition judges recognized her talent, and acknowledged the importance of the IIDA's recognition of her work. "It is definitely an honor to have won first place," she said, "I am appreciative and grateful to all those who have inspired me during this process. My studio Professor Lynette Suslowicz really challenged me to do the research about healthcare design and push my concept further. It is fulfilling to know that my hard work was recognized."
