The City of Casey, in conjunction with Victoria Police, has initiated the 'Gone in a Moment' campaign to remind residents and visitors to the City of Casey to protect their personal property, including handbags, wallets and mobile phones from theft.
City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said 'Council is committed to undertaking regular, proactive community safety campaigns to inform, educate and support the community to prioritise the safety of themselves, their families and their property.
'While the City of Casey is a safe place to live or visit, statistics indicate that opportunistic theft is of concern to the community.
'Don't make it easy for opportunistic thieves. Take note of your surroundings and do everything possible to ensure your personal property is secure when you are out and about in Casey', said Cr Aziz.
As part of the 'Gone in a Moment' campaign, three posters have been developed which focus on the property often targeted by opportunistic criminals. The posters ask, 'Where is your handbag?', 'Where is your wallet?' and 'Where is your mobile?'
The posters will be displayed across the municipality and local businesses and community groups are encouraged to join with Council and local Police in raising awareness of this important community safety issue by displaying the posters in public areas.
City of Casey Manager Community Safety Caroline Bell added 'The City of Casey remains a safe place to live, work and socialise, however, you can never be too careful with your personal belongings.
'Given that personal information is often kept in wallets, mobile phones and handbags, by being aware of your surroundings you can avoid becoming a victim of not just property theft, but also the related crime of identity theft.
'A moment is all that it takes for your belongings to be taken. Residents should always be aware of their surroundings and should take care to ensure their personal property is secure at all times', said Ms Bell.
This project has been funded under the Community Safety Fund grants program, part of the Victorian Government's Community Crime Prevention Program - local solutions for local crime prevention issues.
