CH2M HILL Presents Strategies for Sustainable Data Center Design at China Seminar of Green Data Center Construction and Sustainable Development

June 14, 2012

CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, delivered a June 13 presentation on sustainable design strategies for latest-generation data center facilities at the Seminar of Green Data Center Construction and Sustainable Development organized by the Shanghai Economy and the Information Committee.

Attendees from government and business enterprises gathered at the Renaissance Shanghai Zhongshan Park Hotel  to discuss advanced technologies and share their experience. CH2M HILL was the only design firm presenting at the event.

The presentation was delivered by Jeff Cross, Vice President & Global Director of Sustainable Solutions for CH2M HILL's Industrial & Advanced Technology group and Steel Zhu, Industrial & Advanced Technology group China Business Development Director.

CH2M HILL is regarded as a global leader in sustainable data center design. CH2M HILL has created breakthrough modular data center concepts for a number of data center industry leaders that dramatically reduce energy consumption by 50% or more while reducing operational costs, up-front capital expenses and a facility's overall Power Usage Efficiency (PUE).

The CH2M HILL presentation shared specific strategies for reducing data center energy usage and its related costs. Topics covered included techniques for the use of advanced airflow modeling, fine-tuning industrial air handling equipment, specialized chilled water systems and the use of economizers.

Strategies were shared for modifying these energy-saving approaches to meet the unique needs of individual data centers and for integrating energy-efficient solutions into data center projects with aggressive construction schedules.

The presenters also reviewed a current trend being lead by CH2M HILL to "sustainably repurpose" aging buildings into cost-effective data center facilities. He shared examples of recent CH2M HILL projects that have involved conversion of older buildings into new high-performance data centers.

CH2M HILL's industry-leading sustainable projects include:

  • For Quality Technology Services (QTS) ( http://www.qualitytech.com/data-centers/northeast/richmond-va), the recent conversion of a former semiconductor manufacturing facility into a 100-megawatt, 121,000-square-meter "green" data center with more than 46,000 square meters of raised floor.
  • One of the world's highest-density data centers, a multi-story facility exceeding 5,382 watts per square meter.
  • An innovative high density/10,760 watts per square meter "chiller-less" data center concept design for Stanford University using natural ventilation and saving more than $5 million in energy costs per year.
  • Sustainable technology parks featuring renewable energy, including Colorado's Niobrara Energy Park and Nevada's Star Peak Energy Center. (Both projects won Business Achievement Awards from the Environmental Business Journal and the Climate Change Business Journal).
