Moria Cairns Chambers and Krishnan Subrahmanian have been selected to be the student speakers at the medical school's commencement on June 16.
As was announced earlier in the spring, the keynote address will be delivered by Margaret Hamburg, MD, the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a former health commissioner for New York City.
Chambers is a PhD candidate in microbiology and immunology. Subrahmanian is an MD candidate with a residency in pediatrics and global health. They were chosen to speak in a vote by their classmates.
The graduation begins at 2 p.m. in a tent on the Alumni Lawn, the green in front of the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge. A reception will follow outside the tent and will last until about 5 p.m. Before commencement, there is an invitation-only luncheon on the CCSR Lawn.
As of May 29, a total of 208 degrees were earned at the medical school during the past year, though not all degree recipients will be present at the ceremony. The breakdown of degrees includes 53 master's degrees, 79 doctor of philosophy degrees and 76 doctor of medicine degrees.
Among the PhDs being issued are seven in biochemistry, nine in biomedical informatics, two in biophysics, 11 in cancer biology, four in chemical systems biology, three in developmental biology, 13 in genetics, 10 in immunology, six in microbiology and immunology, three in molecular and cellular physiology and 11 in neurology.
