GRAMMY-nominated rock band discuss their new album and perform live from 98.7-FM's Penthouse

On May 31 GRAMMY-nominated rock band Garbage were the featured guests at 98.7-FM's Penthouse, an exclusive concert series hosted by Los Angeles-based radio station KYSR-FM at the historic Hollywood Tower in Hollywood, Calif. Before an intimate crowd of radio contest winners, Garbage performed an acoustic set featuring the Billboard Hot 100 hit "Only Happy When It Rains," "I Think I'm Paranoid," "Vow," and "Blood For Poppies," a song from their most recent release, Not Your Kind Of People.
Prior to the performance, Garbage's Duke Erickson (bass/guitar/keyboards), Shirley Manson (vocals), Steve Marker (guitar/keyboards), and Butch Vig (drums) participated in an exclusive interview with GRAMMY.com and discussed the inspiration behind their new album, touring, being nominated for a GRAMMY, and what drives them to keep making music, among other topics.
"There's a lot of outsider themes on the album … feeling like you don't fit in very well with the rest of everybody else," said Marker. "That's how a lot of us felt growing up and maybe still do a little bit."
"When we started writing the music to 'Not Your Kind Of People,' it happened very quickly," said Vig regarding the album's title track. "We wanted it to be not really a pop song but a journey. … It's meant to be an affirmation of understanding that it's OK to be different."

Garbage was formed in Madison, Wisc., in 1993 by Erikson, Marker and Vig, who later recruited Scottish singer Manson. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1995, which peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of the hit singles "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl," the latter of which garnered the group two GRAMMY nominations in 1996 for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Garbage also earned a nomination for Best New Artist that year. Version 2.0 followed in 1998, peaking at No. 13 on the chart and featuring the hit singles "Push It" and "I Think I'm Paranoid." The band's sophomore effort was acknowledged at the 41st Annual GRAMMY Awards in 1999, garnering nominations for Best Rock Album and Album Of The Year, and a third nomination the following year for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal for "Special." Beautiful Garbage was released in 2001, followed by 2005's Bleed Like Me, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
Released May 22 on the band's own label, Stunvolume Records, Not Your Kind Of People peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200.
"[It's] our first record in seven years and it's like we never left," said Erikson.
