Memorial Day weekend signals the start of summer,
traditionally a hazardous season for the Army and the US
Army Medical Command (MEDCOM), with notable increases in
off-duty fatal accidents. The MEDCOM is beginning the
summer with three off-duty, privately-owned vehicle (POV)
and privately-owned motorcycle (POM) fatalities this fiscal
year and with the challenge to do all we can to eliminate
future preventable accidents. I ask you to double your
efforts on POC and POM accident prevention. Empower each
individual to do what it takes to protect their self and
the life of a fellow Soldier, Civilian, contractor or
Family member.
The US army Combat Readiness/Safety Center officially
launched the 2012, Take-5 for Summer Safety Campaign, which
runs through the end of September and focuses on providing
Soldiers, Civilians, and their Family members the
information they need to be safe this summer. As this
year's Safe Summer campaign gets into full swing this
Memorial Day weekend, we challenge each of you to use
composite risk management and safety tools to maintain
safety awareness and minimize risk. We must strive to
protect not only our combat power but the lives of our
MEDCOM Family. This year's campaign offers products and
information on a wide variety of off-duty topics from
boating to climbing safety to help protect every member of
our Army team. Go to https://safety.army.mil and click on
the Take-5 logo to access these products and bolster your
summer safety program.
As you are enjoying the beginning of summer, take time to
pay tribute to the memory of the men and women who have
sacrificed their lives so we may live in freedom-to those
who gave their full and final measure. I ask you take time
to remember your brothers and sisters in uniform who have
been wounded or who currently find themselves in harm's
way in service to our Nation. To each of you-I honor your
service. Have a great holiday weekend. Army Safe is Army
Strong.
Serving to Heal…Honored to Serve!
