FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 18, 2012
HONOLULU - Lieutenant Governor Brian Schatz leaves today for a five day trip to Taiwan and Korea, where he will attend the inauguration of President Ma Ying-Jeou. He will have a personal audience with President Ma to discuss economic cooperation in the areas of tourism, higher education, and energy. After meeting with President Ma and senior officials in higher education, energy and tourism, Schatz will travel to Taichung City and sign an agreement between Hawai`i and Taichung for collaboration on clean energy and tourism. In early 2012, President Obama put Taiwan on the list for consideration as a "Visa Waiver" country, and a decision is expected within a year. If this moves forward as expected, the Taiwan tourism market for Hawai`i is expected to see strong growth.
Schatz will then depart for Korea to speak at the "Travel Agent Mission" in Seoul, and meet with the Korean travel media, airlines and other tourism officials to discuss how to capitalize on the already rapid growth in the Korea tourism market.
