"Let's Move on Course!" Encourages Spectators to Get Moving
at the 73rd Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid
10,000 pedometers to be distributed to fans by
Hospital for Special Surgery, promoting golf as a healthy activity
BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - Fans at the 73rd Senior PGA Championship, May 22-27, at Harbor Shores Golf Club, will not only have a chance to watch their favorite players, but will also experience the health benefits of golf first-hand. For the second consecutive year, ThePGA of America encourages spectators to participate in "Let's Move on Course!," exclusively sponsored by Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), to promote the health and fitness benefits that come with spending time walking the golf course, both as fans and as players.
Fans attending the 73rd Senior PGA Championship are encouraged to pick up a free pedometer at the "Let's Move on Course!" booth, located at the Main Spectator Entrance, and track their steps as they follow their favorite golfers around the course. Golf appears to be a leisurely pursuit and not an energetic sport, but health and fitness experts advocate that taking 10,000 steps a day - the equivalent of walking 18 holes - improves overall fitness and helps with weight control. Ultimately, The PGA of America wants everyone to recognize the health benefits associated with walking the course when they play. And, since May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, it is the perfect time to hit the links for fun, relaxing and enjoyable exercise.
"We want people to realize that golf is a healthy lifestyle choice and a great way for people to engage in physical activity together," said David Donatucci, director of fitness for The PGA of America. "The best thing about golf as exercise is that it doesn't feel like you're exercising. Walking 18 holes through beautiful scenery is a fun, moderate exercise that the people of all ages can enjoy."
A total of 10,000 pedometers will be given away between Tuesday, May 22, and Sunday, May 27, with a limited supply distributed each day on a first-come, first-served basis. Individuals are encouraged to visit www.hss.edu/golf and create a personalized "walking" account to record their number of steps online. HSS has customized hss.edu/golfto encourage golfers and golf fans to walk the course by offering them an easy way to keep track of their steps and calculate how those steps contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
"This website is an extension of our commitment to injury prevention and to promoting a healthy lifestyle," said HSS CEO Lou Shapiro. "Golf and walking are a natural fit, and HSS is proud to partner again with The PGA of America on LMOC and engage golfers and golf fans all year long."
"Let's Move on Course!" was officially launched in 2010 at the 92nd PGA Championship, held at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis. In 2010, The PGA of America joined the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation as its 100th member. The PGA will continually contribute to the Foundation's campaign to promote ways to help people achieve a healthy weight by promoting the health and wellness benefits of golf.
