In 2011, Wollongong was virtually under siege- gripped by fear, police politics, media and the city's surveillance network. The NSW Police Association, citing CCTV camera footage, claimed violent crime was 'out of control' in Wollongong. News media ran with the story, but was the region really going wild?
This is the question which will be investigated, along with the dangerous ideas, truth and histories of crime in Wollongong and abroad by 'Crime, Cameras Action!' a special event to be held at the University of Wollongong on February 18.The event aims to unpack attendee's assumptions about crime, policing and the media and to explore how justice can be usurped by powerful interests.
The public are invited to come along and see academic and non-academic presentations by researchers, media professionals and community advocates. Roseanne Catt, Australia's longest serving female prisoner, who was framed for her husband's attempted murder and wrongly imprisoned for ten years, will be the event's keynote speaker.
Roseanne will speak about her new book, Ten Years, which recounts the dishonesty, manipulation and malice of the police officer who charged her, and the lies and deceptions of her husband as they successfully hoodwinked the justice system.
Other speakers include Underbelly scriptwriter Felicity Packard, former Illawarra Mercury editor Nick Hartgerink and historians Dr Glenn Mitchell and Rob Carr.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery and former NSW MP and prominent corruption fighter John Hatton, whose allegations of police corruption led to 1997's Wood Royal Commission, will open the event.
Crime, Cameras, Action! will be held in UOW Building 20, Lecture Theatre 4 on February 18, 2012. The event will run from 9am-5pm and is FREE and open to the general public. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided for participants.
