The revitalisation of Beenleigh is one step closer with Logan City Council soon to lodge a full submission under round two of the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF).
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Russell Lutton (Division 2), said if successful, the $11 million funding would play a pivotal role in Council's plans to revamp Beenleigh and unlock the suburb's economic potential.
Council has already allocated $10 million to the initiative and has sought an equal contribution from the State Government.
''The Federal Government has made funding of between $500,000 and $15 million available as part of round two of these grants and Council is keen to secure a slice of this funding to ensure Beenleigh's future,'' Cr Lutton said.
''One of the criteria for these funds is that the projects are 'investment-ready'. That is certainly the case with this one - we are champing at the bit to start work on the revitalisation of Beenleigh.
''All the planning, zoning, environmental and other relevant approvals are in place and we are eager to start. Council has worked hard with all sections of the local community and local businesses and developers in particular are very keen to see some injection of funds into the town centre.''
Cr Lutton said successful projects would be announced in mid-May while all funding agreements would be negotiated and executed within two months of the announcement.
''In particular the funding is being sought to help deliver the Central Beenleigh Renewal Plan (CBRP), which forms part of the implementation programme for the Beenleigh Master Plan,'' he said.
Cr Lutton said elements of the Renewal Plan for which funding is sought would include the installation of community infrastructure, streetscape treatments and improved signage as well as infrastructure to support more pedestrian and cycle transport.
He said the funding did not include the relocation of Beenleigh State High School.
''Despite what has been reported in some areas, Beenleigh State High School is not part of the Beenleigh Master Plan,''' Cr Lutton said.
''The project will specifically respond to four priority areas repeatedly identified in the Logan and Redlands Regional Roadmap - economic development and job creation; improved transport; promoting social inclusion as well as growth management; and planning to balance economic, social and environmental demands.
''Council has invested considerable energy and resources in the recently endorsed Beenleigh Master Plan and this RDAF allocation would help us bring it to life.''
