Ben Maher with the nine year old Tripple X III owned by
Quainton Stud and himself, took Olympia by storm this
afternoon winning the UK Leg of the FEI World Cup qualifier
beating many of the world's best and a cheque for
£33,000.
Going tenth of the eleven combinations through to the second
round they set the packed grandstands alight by coming home
clear in a fraction of a second faster than the
incredibly fast time laid down by Marcus
Ehning. Marcus, who had produced the second clear of the
jump off up had laid down the gauntlet by galloping between
the fences in an incredibly twisting course that required
tight turns back to uprights that caused eight of the eleven
riders to incur faults.
It was clear from the outset that Ben wasn't going to settle
for anything other than a win and his focus and approach most
certainly paid off. Tripple X, already a long striding
horse covered the ground at a pace that brought audible gasps
from the crowd and left them gripping their seats as the
combination came to the last fence. Knowing he had
to come through the finish faster than the 39.05secs he had
to beat, Ben pushed to the last before galloping through the
finish in a time of 38,71. From the cheers that erupted
around the arena there wasn't a need for Ben to glance at the
clock to know whether he'd won. The smile on his face
before he'd even pulled up was all too evident, his delight
mirrored by everyone around the arena.
Talking after the competition Ben commented "Tripple X really
is an unbelievable horse. We've had a difficult year,
but we just couldn't have had a better end and I can't tell
you how pleased I am with him. I bred him myself which
makes it even more special. He's always looked like he'd
be great and he's really now showing that he is; he'll be the
main horse I'm going to focusing on for next year. This
is the biggest win we've had and to have won the World Cup
here makes it even better, it's such a fantastic show and to
have the crowd behind you like this .
Three other British riders made it through to the jump off. Robert Whitaker, with Mandy Hall and Clare Whitakers 10year old USA Today who finished in 7th place having incurred 4faults in the jump off. Guy Williams with his own 11year old Titus who also incurred 4faults finishin gin a time of 43.24. Laura Renwick, leading lady rider on the GBR Ranking List with Lady Kirkham and Lady Harris's 9year old chestnut Oz de Breve produced the fastest clear in the first round however an unfortunate two fences down in the jump off relegated them to 11th place and just outside the placings.
