The Larimer County Youth Conservation Corps has announced that additional project dollars for young people ages 16 to 25 for summer employment thanks to funding approved by the board of directors of Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) yesterday. The GOCO board voted to disperse $500,000 in lottery funds statewide to local government and open space organizations for critical outdoor recreation and land conservation projects that will enhance Colorado’s trails, parks, open spaces and wildlife habitat. The Larimer County Youth Conservation Corps has received $19,460 of those funds for local projects in support of Larimer County Natural Resources Department..
The funding results in eight additional jobs for young people aged 16 to 25 across Larimer County, where the current unemployment rate is 6.8% (April 2011).  The Larimer County Youth Conservation Corps will help restore high quality wildlife habitat and create sustainable trails at three Larimer County open spaces. Youth Corps crews will conduct forestry activities and reroute trails to protect sensitive habitat at Lion’s River Bluffs and Horsetooth Mountain Open Space. The project will result in improved riparian habitat along the historic Poudre River and safer trails at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space.
Statewide, local governments will receive a total of $250,000 and open space organizations will receive $250,000 to hire youth corps to implement land stewardship projects.
“This is great news for local youth, who gain valuable work experience through service learning projects across Larimer County’s open space and natural areas.” said Maelly Oropeza, Larimer County youth conservation Corps Program Coordinator.  “And it’s good news for our community and environment, which can reap the benefits of our young people’s dedication and hard work for generations to come.”
In April of this year, Governor John Hickenlooper announced that $1 million in GOCO/Lottery funding would create 400 statewide outdoor jobs for youth and young adults through the ten youth corps accredited by the Colorado Youth Corps Association (CYCA). Yesterday’s vote by the GOCO board to begin leveraging those funds is well timed with a number of land stewardship projects being launched by youth corps this month. Additional projects are slated for 2012. The remaining $500,000 will be allocated equally for youth corps projects within Colorado State Parks and State Wildlife Areas.
