The new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard halves the bandwidth needed to access HD or SD videos, making high definition available to a far wider audience. With this new technology, customers who own HEVC compatible Samsung*televisions will enjoy higher-quality access to Orange's video on demand service.
This partnership with Samsung illustrates Orange's strategy to offer HD video to as broad an audience as possible by using the HEVC standard with connected televisions, and making Orange's set-top boxes HEVC-compatible in the future.
Thierry Souche, Senior Vice President of Orange Labs Products and Services says "Orange is one of the only operators worldwide to be involved in developing new video standards like HEVC. This partnership illustrates our support to disruptive technologies, our researchers' involvement in standardisation organisations and our commitment to accelerating the industry adoption of HEVC."
Stéphane Cotte, Vice President of Audio-Video for Samsung Electronics France, explains: "We are thrilled to be working with Orange to develop HEVC, a new technological standard which we plan to launch starting in March 2013. It's a significant opportunity that goes hand in hand with the launch of our new 2013 Smart TV line-up*".
After working together to promote Orange's innovative content and service on all of Samsung's terminals, the two companies have teamed up to improve the TV experience for all of their customers, online, at home, or on the go.
* TV's compatible HEVC are Series 7, 8 and 9.
