Video Webcast - Public Discussion on Improving Adult Literacy

A high level of literacy is necessary for succeeding in a competitive job market, supporting a family, navigating health information, and participating in civic activities. Yet 43 percent of U.S. adults lack the literacy skills to lead fully productive and secure lives, says the recently released National Research Council report Improving Adult Literacy: Options for Practice and Research.

The Research Council will host a public discussion about the educational needs of adults with low literacy and strategies for improving their employment and economic opportunities. Members of the report's authoring committee and invited experts will discuss the report's key findings and recommendations and consider how they may be used to shape and support activities at federal, state, and local levels for improving adult literacy instruction. Copies of the report can be downloaded for free at http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13242.

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EDT in Room 100 of the National Academies' KeckCenter, 500 Fifth St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
