SILVER SPRING, Md., Dec. 14, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sandy Spring Bank today celebrated the second year of an initiative to bring financial literacy education to high school students in Montgomery County Public Schools by providing them with access to the EverFi-Financial LiteracyTMplatform. This web-based platform uses the latest in new media technologies - video, animations, 3-D gaming, avatars, and social networking - to bring complex financial concepts to life for today's digital generation. Representatives from Sandy Spring Bank, Montgomery County Public Schools, and EverFi joined students and faculty of James Hubert Blake High School to celebrate this initiative. Through the high school platform, MCPS students become certified in over 600 topics in financial education, allowing them to become more informed, responsible citizens. Sandy Spring Bank has partnered with EverFi, Inc. to bring the interactive financial management program to these students at no cost to the schools.
"Financial Literacy is a very valuable skill that our students need to obtain before they go out into the world," states Cindy Gleason, Career Support Program teacher at James Hubert Blake High School. "Through the use of EverFi the students at Blake High School are able to actively participate on the computer to learn and reinforce their financial literacy skills in several areas from banking and credit to taxes, mortgages and 401(k)s. Since the program is self-paced, the students work at a pace that is comfortable to them and are able to go back and review materials they have not mastered. Our students really enjoy interacting with the games and simulations to test their competence."
The 10-unit course offers 6 hours of programming aimed at teaching, assessing and certifying students in a variety of financial topics including credit scores, insurance, credit cards, student loans, mortgages, taxes, stocks, savings, 401(k)s and other critical concepts that map to national financial literacy standards. The platform uniquely tracks the progress and score of every student and provides students who successfully complete the course with Certification in Financial Literacy, a valuable mark of distinction on college applications and resumes.
"Sandy Spring Bank has a 25 year history of participating in financial literacy efforts by teaching both adults and children the importance of establishing healthy financial habits," states Daniel J. Schrider, President and Chief Executive Officer. "As a company, we are committed to enhancing lives in the communities we serve, and providing financial literacy programs is one way we can help our neighbors to live prosperously."
