Indianapolis - Oct. 17, 2012 - WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP) has named Leeba Lessin as senior vice president and president of its Medicare business.
Lessin came to WellPoint through its 2011 acquisition of California-based CareMore. She was an integral leader in helping CareMore develop its unique care model, which has proven successful in addressing the complex health problems associated with aging. Most recently, Lessin served as CareMore's president. In her new role, Lessin will continue to oversee CareMore's operations as well as the operations of WellPoint's Medicare business, which serves more than 2 million members in 14 states through its subsidiaries.
"Leeba has been a passionate advocate for senior health through her work with CareMore," said John Cannon, WellPoint interim president and chief executive officer. "We're very fortunate to be able to tap her expertise at WellPoint at a time when so many Baby Boomers are aging into Medicare and looking for products that will help them maintain their health."
Part of Lessin's responsibility will be to expand CareMore's model into WellPoint's Medicare business, including this year's launch of WellPoint-affiliated plans with access to the CareMore health delivery system in Richmond, Va., and Brooklyn, N.Y.
Before joining CareMore, Lessin held several executive positions at PacifiCare Health Systems. She also served as president and chief executive officer of Monarch Health Systems, a primary care physician system in California's central coast, and as principal of Lessin Management Associates, providing strategic consultation services to medical groups and managed care organizations.
WellPoint's Medicare business has the privilege and responsibility of serving the health benefit needs of more than 2.7 million senior and disabled Americans every day. Through its subsidiaries, WellPoint provides Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug benefits. WellPoint's affiliated companies offer a broad portfolio of products designed to meet the needs of today's Medicare beneficiaries.
