National Grid will be working extended hours on a vital project to help ensure the people of Knightsbridge continue to have safe and reliable gas supplies at their fingertips.

Vital work to replace ageing metal gas mains with tough new plastic pipes is due to begin on Monday 4 February and will involve lane and junction closures. Temporary four way traffic lights will also be deployed at the junction of Queens Gate and Old Brompton Road between February 16 and 24.

The project will be delivered in phases as follows (all dates approximate and subject to change):

Phase 1: From Old Brompton Road to the junction with Clarevill Street, Monday 4 February for approximately two weeks.

The Clarevill Junction will be closed from 8am on Friday 8 February to 8pm on Sunday 10 February.  A signed diversion will be in place during this time.

Phase 2:  From junction with Clarevill Street to opposite 107 Queens Gate and Onslow Gardens, Monday 18 February for approximately eight days.

Phase 3: From outside 107 Queens Gate to opposite 107 Old Brompton Road, Tuesday 26 February for approximately four days.

Phase 4: From outside the Kensington Hotel to opposite 88 Queens Gate, Saturday 2 March for approximately nine days.

Project engineer Herbie Thomas said: "It's our job to connect people to the energy they use and that's what we're doing with this vital project. It will help make sure that local people continue to have safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.

He added: "Wherever possible the new mains will be inserted into the old pipes which will reduce the need for digging."

Service pipes to some properties are also being replaced. To do this engineers need access to these properties and to temporarily disconnect their gas supply. Those affected will be notified in advance. People should always ask to see official identification from engineers before letting them into their property. For more advice and to verify the identity of one of our employees or for more information on the work call 0845 2461285.

The project is being delivered National Grid in partnership with Morrison Utility Services.
