The City of Boston's George Wright Golf Course has been chosen for two upcoming events hosted by the U.S. Golf Association (USGA) and Massachusetts Golf Association (MGA).
On Tuesday, June 19, the George Wright will be the location for the local qualifying round for the 2012 USGA Amateur Public Links Championship being held at the Soldier Hollow Golf Club in Midway, UT, from July 9 to 14. More than 50 local golfers have signed up to play 36 holes at stroke play in order to qualify for the Championship.
The course will also host the 2012 MGA Amateur Public Links Championship on July 31 and August 1. The championship field comprises 120 golfers for day one with a cut to the low 60 players and ties on day two.
"Boston's golfers have long known that the George Wright Golf Course is one of the finest public golf courses in the state," noted Mayor Thomas M. Menino, who has golfed at both the City-owned courses. "We welcome the players to the upcoming USGA and MGA events along with the recognition that this course has earned both locally and nationally."
Cited by the New England Golf Association as one of the premier courses in Massachusetts, the 18-hole Donald Ross-designed George Wright Golf Course is a hidden gem in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston. The course is open seven days a week through November. This par 70 layout measures 6,440 yards from the back tees and is a challenge to golfers of any level.
The George Wright Golf Course was recognized in 2011 as "Best Public Golf Course" by Boston Magazine in its 38th annual "Best of Boston" awards issue. The magazine noted that the George Wright offers "a fun, fair test with lots of elevation changes, and there might not be finer back-to-back holes in the state than the 9th and 10th." More recognition came in the fall of 2011 from Golfweek which included the George Wright in its list of the "10 Best Courses You Can Play In Massachusetts."
The City of Boston also operates the William J. Devine Golf Course in Dorchester. Both courses are owned and operated through the Fund for Parks and Recreation and feature full pro shops, concessions, cart rentals, and lessons for all ages.
