Nacogdoches, Texas, Awarded Membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry

Spring, Texas, January 28, 2013- Nacogdoches, Texas, has been awarded membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry as part of Union Pacific's ongoing efforts to highlight cities with a historical connection to the railroad. The city received an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young in a special presentation at a recent Nacogdoches city council meeting. Union Pacific launched its Train Town USA Registry as part of the railroad's 150th anniversary celebration in 2012.
"We are proud to recognize Nacogdoches as we celebrate our growing up together," said Clint Schelbitzki, Union Pacific director - Public Affairs. "Union Pacific was founded to help connect the nation from east to west. Our shared heritage with Nacogdoches is a source of pride as we remember our past while delivering the goods American businesses and families use every day."
Railroads have been an important part of Nacogdoches history since the first track was laid in 1883, and the first railroad, Houston East & West Texas (HE&WT), traveled through town. Railroads brought a shift in the small town's economy, and the population tripled in only four years. Nacogdoches became a major crossroads for the railroad in 1903 when the Texas and New Orleans line, the T&O, laid track through Nacogdoches linking Beaumont to Dallas. HE&WT operated under its own name until it was acquired by Southern Pacific Railroad in 1934. Union Pacific acquired the Southern Pacific line in 1997.
