Actress and singer Lucie Arnaz coming to Lafayette
to promote women's heart health at Go Red luncheon

LAFAYETTE, La. - Lucie Arnaz, film and Broadway actress, singer and daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, is coming to Lafayette as the keynote speaker for the 2013 Go Red For Women luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 7.

Women's heart disease is one of the nation's most overlooked health issues. Although it remains the No. 1 killer of women, heart disease is often seen as a predominately male concern.

The American Heart Association and LHC Group, partners in an ongoing mission to raise awareness of the effects of heart disease on women, are working to change that through the Go Red For Women cause - an initiative to educate area women on the dangers of heart disease and how they can help prevent it. LHC Group is the exclusive cause champion of Go Red For Women in Acadiana.

Each year, the Go Red For Women luncheon is the regional focal point in the AHA's effort to encourage women to embrace a heart-healthy lifestyle. The luncheon will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Lafayette Hilton Hotel. For tickets and information, please contact Deborah Pierce with the AHA at deborah.pierce@heart.org or 337.316.0951.

Arnaz has been a strong advocate of the Go Red cause for many years - her mother passed away in 1989 due to complications from a heart condition. She is a dynamic and entertaining speaker with a fascinating and moving story to tell about her famous family and how heart disease affected their lives.

"I am thrilled to be headed to Louisiana in February," Arnaz said. "I look forward to meeting all the fantastic Go Red For Women ladies and to talking with you all about heart health, taking care of ourselves, staying healthy despite our busy schedules, influencing our families to live healthier lifestyles and even my own family's health history.

"Women's health is so vital to everyone - both to our loved ones and to ourselves. If we don't take care of ourselves, we won't be able to be there for our spouses, children, parents or friends. I hope you are all being good to yourselves, and I can't wait to see you!"

Each year, almost half a million women die from heart disease. LHC Group and the AHA work together to spread the message that simple changes in diet and lifestyle can help prevent the condition.

Lafayette-based LHC Group is a leading national provider of post-acute care services. With locations in 19 states, the company's 8,000 employees see firsthand the devastating impacts of heart disease.

"Around the country, our professional clinicians deal directly with the effects of heart disease every day," said Keith G. Myers, LHC Group's chairman and CEO. "We are proud to support this effort to help women take control of their heart health."

Known for its use of a red dress, the AHA's Go Red For Women movement began in 2003 as an effort to bring heart disease to the forefront of women's health. Around the nation, more than 800,000 women have chosen to "Go Red," taking a meaningful step toward better heart health. Area women can enroll in the free Go Red program at goredforwomen.org.

"Thanks to support from LHC Group, AHA is reaching more and more people with our message and mission to prevent heart disease and stroke," said Deborah Pierce, regional director of the American Heart Association. "We encourage everyone to come to the luncheon for an educational, moving and entertaining afternoon. Only by working together can we help prevent the spread of cardiovascular disease in Acadiana."

In Acadiana, the Go Red For Women cause is supported by dedicated volunteers through the Circle of Red and the new Red Tie Society.

Circle of Red is an elite group of women committed to helping the AHA encourage women to take charge of their heart health and live stronger, longer lives and to supporting a mission of "building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."

The Red Tie Society is a group of men who support and advocate for the heart health of the women in their lives. Members serve as ambassadors in the community in an effort to educate one another, get the women in their lives talking about heart health and change the health of their families, communities and the world.
