This week National Grid starts work to upgrade the gas system in Norwich City Centre to ensure that residents and businesses continue to enjoy safe and dependable gas supplies in the future.
On Wednesday 20 February engineers begin a four-week improvement scheme to replace 155 metres of old iron gas main along the pedestrian way of Timber Hill, from the junction of Golden Ball Street to Lion Street, with new long-lasting plastic pipes.
Although Timber Hill will be closed to pedestrians, people will still be able to visit the shopping centre via other streets. Access for deliveries via Timber Hill will be maintained throughout our project.
National Grid project manager Kevin Pettitt said: "The gas pipes that run under Timber Hill have served us well and it's now time to replace them. We will be laying new plastic pipes that are very tough, will last for around 80 years and will need no or little maintenance."
He added: "To speed up the job we will be using a process called insertion which means pushing the new pipe through the old one. By using this method we can really reduce the amount of digging we have to do which saves time and minimises disruption to the public."
