UNION GAS HELPS BRING NORTH BAY'S WATERFRONT TO LIFE
$500 grant to Community Waterfront Friends to develop Community Waterfront Park
Dec.14, 2012
North Bay, ON - Union Gas is supporting a project that will convert North Bay's waterfront rail lands to a community park, courtesy of a $500 grant awarded today to Community Waterfront Friends (CWF).
Don Beauchamp, Union Gas district manager for the northeast district, presented the cheque to Dr. Rod Johnston, chair of CWF, at the pergola in North Bay's Community Waterfront Park, today.
"At Union Gas, we believe in investing today to ensure a bright tomorrow," said Beauchamp. "That means being environmental stewards and supporting important ecological programs in the communities we serve. We are very pleased to help Community Waterfront Friends make this community an even better place to live and work."
Creation of Community Waterfront Park is part of a long-term plan to transform North Bay's waterfront into a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable community resource.
The four-phase plan includes an environmental cleanup, construction of a pedestrian underpass connecting the downtown and the waterfront, rejuvenation of the downtown area and close to $40 million in development around the park area. This year the civic plaza was completed, the park was shaped and completely grassed and by spring next year the community will see work on the attractions begin. The "Leaves of Inspiration" pergola is CWF's fundraiser which hopes to raise and contribute one million dollars for this phase of the plan.
"Our goal was to create a lasting space for everyone in our community to enjoy", said Johnston. "Thanks to organizations like Union Gas we are that much closer!"
